Vanguard News SERAP wants Buhari publicly condemn attacks on journalists, media organisations On Kindly Share This Story: The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to publicly condemn attacks on journalists and media organizations in the country. SERAP made the call on Thursday in Lagos while unveiling a report entitled “Something to Hide?: Media Freedom Under Siege in Nigeria”. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 76-page report was authored by a veteran journalist, Mr Richard Akinnola. According to the report, 36 journalists were attacked between January 2019 and July 2019, with 30 of the attacks recorded during the 2019 General Elections.

NASS will not pass any law against press freedom - Lawan

As this year’s World Press Freedom Day is celebrated globally today, May 3, the National Assembly, has vowed that it would never pass any law that inhibits the freedom of the press in Nigeria. The Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, who gave the assurance in a message of felicitation with Nigerian journalists as they joined their colleagues across the world to celebrate the event, however, urged the practitioners to purge themselves of bad eggs. Lawan noted that May 3 is set aside every year to remind governments around the world of their obligation to facilitate and respect press freedom, and also to remind journalists the need to respect the ethics of their profession.

Nigerian workers oppose scrapping of local councils

Daily Post Nigeria Published Nigerian workers have declared opposition to any reform that seeks to scrap the local government system from the constitution. Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Ayuba Wabba and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Quadri Olaleye issued a joint statement on Monday. The labour leaders said it was unfortunate that despite the challenges in Nigeria, some politicians were working hard to scrap the local councils. They warned that deleting the third system of government would only aggravate the insecurity in the country. Wabba and Olaleye noted that the absence of services and gainful employment was “an open invitation to an apocalypse”.

No plans to relocate to Ghana yet, says Twitter founder

+ Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, revealed on Friday that he has no plans to relocate to Accra yet though the social networking service has set up its African office in Ghana. According to Ghana Web, Ghanaian Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, had disclosed that Jack is expected to relocate Accra in June 2021. “Jack will be based in Accra, so this will be his base while he visits the other countries on the continent and I am hoping that his friends would also follow him and see what he finds so special about Accra,” Ghana Web quoted the minister as saying. A tweep, @asaaseradio995, subsequently tweeted, “Jack Dorsey is expected to relocate to Ghana in June as Twitter sets up its African headquarters in Accra.”
