Democrats Grasinger, Bishop enter Erie County executive race

She s led the International Institute of Erie for nearly a decade and now Dylanna Grasinger is vying to be Erie s next county executive. Grasinger on Friday announced that she will seek the Democratic nomination for county executive in the May 18 primary, in hopes of succeeding incumbent Democrat Kathy Dahlkemper, who is not seeking a third term. Erie County needs to have a more cohesive vision for the region, she said. I think that protecting human service funding, particularly given my background, and increasingly community-based mental health funding is extremely important. I also recognize there s a need to grow our labor force by creating more economic development opportunities, particularly for small businesses, coming out of the pandemic. Given my experience leading in the community it s a good fit, and I just want to be able to be effective and do some good for the largest number of residents that I can.

Erie refugee, immigration officials welcome Biden policies

It was a reunion that almost didn t happen. And when it did, it was incomplete. In 2017, Erie resident and Syrian refugee Bassam Dabbah s parents, Samir Dabbah and Safwat Jarkas, who were living in Jordan, were caught up in President Donald Trump s so-called Muslim ban, which restricted travel to the United States for people living in seven Muslim-majority countries at the time. The United Nations granted them refugee status after they fled their home in Damascus, Syria, and they were scheduled to be resettled in Erie. It came as a heartbreaking blow to Bassam Dabbah, who had waited five years to get his citizenship so he could petition for his parents to be relocated here.
