Probation order for apologetic thief who stole €20 in hold-up

A man who apologised to a pastizzeria attendant after holding her at knifepoint and demanding €20 in cash has been placed under probation for three years after pleading guilty.   Kevin Borg, 41, made his admission in court last week and was sentenced on Tuesday. Magistrate Astrid May Grima said the court had considered his early guilty plea, his cooperation with the police as well as his drug dependence. The court was told last week how Borg wore a face mask and hoodie and was armed with a penknife when he turned up at the outlet on Triq Tumbarellu, Għaxaq, demanding money from the 19-year old attendant.

Holdup suspect runs away with cash... and a tracking device

A man who allegedly held a betting outlet manager at gunpoint ran away with €1,300 and a tracking device handed over with the cash.  The alleged armed robbery took place at a shop on Naxxar Road in San Ġwann at around 8:15pm on March 3. Mark Anthony Bonnici, a 41-year-old Attard resident, was later tracked down by police officers in Sliema. A female shop manager, testifying in court at the start of compilation proceedings against the alleged thief, explained how it was approaching closing time when a hooded man whose face was partly covered by a protective mask, walked into the shop and demanded the cash.

Two men plead not guilty to mugging elderly man on New Year's day

Elton Brincat, 42, from Marsa, and Brandon Cachia, 33, from Vittoriosa, were remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to mugging an elderly man on New Year’s day.  The two were jointly charged with the aggravated theft of the victim’s mobile which took place just after 5am on January 1, in Triq is-Salib tal-Marsa. Brincat was separately charged with slightly injuring the victim, holding him against his will and breaching bail conditions dating back to 2018.  Cachia was separately charged with driving without a licence and insurance cover. Both men were charged with relapsing.  Legal aid lawyer Martin Fenech, assisting Cachia, put forward a request for bail, arguing that the accused s last brush with the law had been “quite way off” in 2017 and besides, this was just the theft of a mobile, albeit allegedly with violence.
