Mayor: city's recovery "essential" in reducing gun violence

By Patrick Adcroft New York City PUBLISHED 9:28 PM ET Apr. 12, 2021 PUBLISHED April 12, 2021 @9:28 PM SHARE Amid an ongoing spike in gun violence in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio Monday assured New Yorkers that bringing back the city economically will help ensure its residents are as safe as possible as summer arrives and more New Yorkers head back outdoors on a regular basis. Crediting the city’s economic comeback as “the most essential thing” they can do to decrease violent crime in the city, de Blasio said the increase in gun violence grew “out of empty streets” in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, when fewer people had jobs and in-person learning at city schools was shuttered, according to the mayor.
