LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Mayor Eric Garcetti is scheduled to fly to Washington tomorrow to meet with federal officials to discuss the need for more infrastructure funding for Los Angeles.
Garcetti is set join House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, and House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Peter DeFazio, D-Oregon, to begin a campaign advocating for more infrastructure spending in cities across the nation, an aide told City News Service.
Garcetti is scheduled to return to Los Angeles Thursday.
WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK
Administration Proposal. President Joe Biden will travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 31, where he will unveil the contours of the infrastructure package.
Biden Preliminary Budget Outline. This week, the Biden administration will release a preview of its Fiscal Year 2022 budget. The figures will allow lawmakers to begin the appropriations process and give Congress information about the president’s discretionary funding priorities. The final budget request is currently expected in May.
Congress Continues Work. Although both chambers will be out of session for the next two weeks on a district work period, lawmakers will continue discussions on the contents of the infrastructure package.
The Democratic-held Congress returns to Washington this week from recess with infrastructure at the top of its agenda. Lawmakers will likely take months to craft and pass massive legislation that would affect everything from roads, bridges, airports and trains to broadband, housing, utilities and job training.
It would also hike the corporate tax rate and seek to deter offshoring of corporate profits. The proposed tax hikes have irked Republicans.
In a statement following the meeting, the White House said Biden and lawmakers had a good exchange of ideas, and the President asked for their feedback and follow-up on proposals discussed in the meeting, while underscoring that inaction is not an option.
