POLL: Which of The National s new billboards is your favourite?

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers? We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions. What should we do with our second vote in 2021? What happens if Westminster says no to indyref2? Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversation, register under fake names, and post vile abuse. We’ve had hundreds of emails from you complaining about this, asking us to take steps to ensure that these people aren’t given a platform on our site.

Unionists seldom tell us what advantages the Union brings us

IS it fear that causes Unionists to spurn full powers, thus retaining subservience to the English-dominated Westminster, or is it cowardice? In the real world, the equivalent to present-day Scottish politics would be “fearing to cut nurse’s apron strings”. Over recent decades we have come through, in succession, the need for self-determination, home rule, a Scottish Parliament and devolution. Driven by the Labour party, questioning why we were governed from Westminster by a party we had not voted for, devolution was duly delivered. George (now Lord) Robertson decreed that “Devolution would kill national stone dead”, while the then Prime Minister Tony Blair described it as similar to a parish council. So, top marks to Tony.
