The B.C. government says it s doubling the amount of forestry revenue that eligible First Nations receive as the province works on a new forestry revenue-sharing model with First Nations leadership.

The ministry said it was changing the deadline because of the substantial effect on First Nations of B.C.’s wildfires and discoveries of unmarked graves at former Indian residential schools.

Legislation passed in 2019 in B.C. established the declaration as the framework for reconciliation in B.C. The act requires the provincial government develop an implementation plan with Indigenous peoples.
“During this time of grief and emergency response, many people across the province require urgent support for very pressing needs,” said Indigenous Relations Minister Murray Rankin. “We have been asked by partners to give more time so people can comment on the draft action plan, and we agree that is the right thing to do.”
