Illinois gambling laws: Betting ban at in-state colleges may be lifted

State lawmakers are considering a number of changes to Illinois gambling laws, including a measure that would lift the prohibition on gambling on in-state colleges and universities. Other measures discussed by the House Executive Committee Wednesday would legalize and regulate certain internet gambling programs, or I-gaming, and ban “sweepstakes” machines which mirror video gambling but are otherwise not regulated by the state the same way slot machines are. Rep. Mike Zalewski, a Riverside Democrat who was one of the lead architects of the gambling expansion bill in 2019 which legalized sports betting, said the prohibition on betting on Illinois collegiate sports teams was put into the law “at the behest of the universities.”

Additional Tax Liabilities Possible for IL Businesses

WBGZ Radio 1/13/2021 | By Greg Bishop - Illinois Radio Network Illinois businesses hit by losses because of government COVID-19 restrictions could collectively be on the hook for half-a-billion dollars in tax liabilities if Gov. J.B. Pritzker gets his way. There’s growing opposition. Pritzker said Wednesday the lame-duck session underway in Springfield should decouple the state tax code from a recent federal change to lower tax liabilities for businesses hurt during the pandemic. “That would essentially deprive Illinois of revenues that it otherwise should get and it’s literally a technical fix,” he said. Friday his administration said the fix would increase the state’s coffers by half-a-billion dollars.
