many have opened their hearts, but not necessarily their wallets. take a look at this. $23 million has been donated to japan relief so far. and it seems like a lot, right? but consider this, $150 million was raised in the first four days after the haiti earthquake. and after hurricane katrina, $108 million was raised in that same amount of time. ken berger joins us now, the president of charity navigator. and ken, i guess my question is, why have monetary donations been coming in so slowly? well, i think some people feel this is a very developed affluent country and they may feel the need may not be quite as stark as the it was in the case of haiti, for example. however, we would argue that
there are concerns this may have caused some damage to the containment vessel and that is important in the case of a full meltdown because that is the last line of defense in keeping in the nastier radiation inside the plant and not seeping into the atmosphere. a fire then in reactor number four. what appears to have happened in this disabled reactor so much heat generated that a pool of water in which there was spent fuel rods evaporated. the fuel rods according to an trs company here may have ignited and caused a fire and led to a sharp spike in the radiation levels. it tumped to a level we have not seen at all previously in the four days of this crisis and that was contained within the plant itself. you say outside the plant, those levels have come down. the government is saying they no longer pose a danger to people that there is this 12 or 13-mile exclusion zone has been expanded to 30 kilometers now. the prime minister telling people to stay inside and keep your windows
