Over 9,300 signatures on DA s Gqeberha petition while NMB mayor faces backlash

The DA launched an online petition to object against the gazetted name changes of Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha, and Uitenhage to Kariega.
The petition was launched on Friday 5 March and has garnered over 9,320 supporters as of Sunday 7 March.
Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Nqaba Bhanga, who is also the DA s provincial leader in the Eastern Cape, has objected to the recent name changes in the region.
I am of the opinion these new names are not inclusive and, in fact, have no isiXhosa meaning.

JOHANNESBURG - You can still call iBhayi Port Elizabeth, for now.
The Arts and Culture Department said the name changes have not been finalised yet.
It said those objecting to the names have 30 days to do so.
Vusithemba Ndima, Acting Deputy Director-General (Cultural Heritage) in the Department of Arts and Culture, said: In next 30 days we are expecting people to say whatever it is they would like to say. People who are against the name can write to the minister and the minister can review the decision depending on what the reasons are for the objections. It has been gazetted as Gqeberha, and other names have been recommended for change, but Gqeberha is one most popular.

Will that which we called iBhayi by any other name sound as sweet?

The ANC has done it again, this time through the minister of sports, arts and culture, Nathi Mthethwa perhaps, some may argue, with the best intentions, but certainly not with the best consequences, both in cultural and in financial terms with the superfluous change of the name of Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape, to that of Gqeberha. It has been pointed out by Veronica van Dyk of the Democratic Alliance that the change is bound to cost millions, which is a no-brainer when considering the multitude of places, contexts and materials where the new name will have to replace the old.

Editorial: Are South Africa’s new names more than a mouthful?
The new name for Port Elizabeth is now Gqeberha. Say it like this: “click-e-b-e-ghaa”. If you have a doctor’s certificate excusing you from the click, an easier pronunciation might be, “K-e-b-e-g-a”, conveniently similar to the city’s long-established suburb, Kabega Park. Which is no coincidence: Gqeberha is the isiXhosa name for the Baakens River that runs through the city, and is also the name for the city’s Walmer Township.
Residents are already accustomed to referring to their city as iBhayi or PE or eMambozana. Yet, despite not being a new name, per se, Gqeberha is proving to be tongue-twister for some, and a name with very little resonance for others.
