tell us how much of an escalation this is and how much the impact of the backdrop of south korea and u.s. conducting huge military drills? reporter: hi, bianca. hi, max. it s still escalating because minutes ago the japanese government reported that yet another missile has been launched by north korea. we re now to 11 missiles launched today. the last time we saw anything like this was back in june when they launched 8. they ve been fired throughout the day from the east and west coast of north korea and including an area where kim jong-un has a summer residence. these missiles according to the japanese government, some followed an irregular trajectory showing they could be hyper sonic. since the korean peninsula was divided, one of the missiles
putin is warning his navy will respond with, quote, lightning speed against anyone who undermine s russia s sovereignty. so part of this was a threat from putin to use hyper sonic cruise missiles. remind us of the capability of these missiles. yes, what he was talking about was cone missiles. this is a new part of russia s arsenal which has been building up since the invasion of crimea in 2014 and what we saw then. we know they ve used hyper sonic missiles in ukraine. the missiles were used in march. those are air launch missiles and that was seen as a serious move particularly by the u.s. but the cone missiles announced to be coming into service in the coming months they have been successfully tested about 600 miles, according to russia and
sarah sidener here in ukraine with me tonight, one of the focuses as we hear about the hypersonic missile ukraine, and strikes in odesa, what is happening. you talked about the 12 hyper sonic missiles well three hit odesa in the last day and basically what they hit were civilian targets. it was two hotels and a mall. the devastation is widespread from the exact points where they hit and you look at these pictures and you can see that those missiles do the absolute you the most destruction. what we re seeing in odesa is important because it s clear it is a strategic move, russia trying to take that strategic port town. why is the port so important? because that is how ukraine gets goods and gives goods to europe. so taking that out and trying to keep them from being able to use the black sea is a huge deal, not just that s right,
significance in that part of ukraine. they tried to move south of the town but they seem to focus now on towards sloviansk. it is back and forth. the russians have not made appreciable progress there. they re incremental at best. smault distances and the ukrainians continue to fight back. some towns and villages have swapped hands a number of times. there was some concern that russia might try to use hyper sonic missiles. we don t know. they may have fired hyper sonics in odesa. we have seen additional standoff strikes into odesa and not clear what they think they re hitting but we re not able to confirm hyper sonics. i have a couple questions
hope the trip would be all about but right now it s kind of radio silence regrets is very odd maybe it s not all that s a wrong term but it s entirely predictable with these people we saw before the obama people they sort of became a joke leading from behind that s the same team around it that is how they seem to think about stuff like were not really going to go out there, they really are they believe in this stuff. look when i was out there last year every single request ukrainians it made was met with a response from the white house to exploratory and provocative. they have food and demonstrating his newest most modern icbm that you can put a hyper sonic on it that can defeat our defenses and our response from the biden administration has been to hide our capabilities. peace is cap to by demonstrating
