Community Foundation awards $106K in new grants | News, Sports, Jobs

Mar 16, 2021 Courtesy Photo Alcona Historical Society received a $2,972 Community Impact Grant for the Sprucing Up Bailey School project. ALPENA The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan recently awarded a new round of community grants covering a four-county area that includes Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties. The CFNEM Board of Trustees recently approved 46 new grants totaling $106,515. Of that amount, $84,289 was awarded in Community Impact Grants, and $22,226 was awarded in grants from the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council. New Community Impact Grants are: ¯ Alcona Community Schools $1,000 for the Alcona Wrestling program; ¯ Alcona Community Schools $3,000 for the Elementary School Outdoor Classroom; ¯ Alcona County Commission on Aging $1,500 for the Alcona County Commission on Aging Technology Loan Center;

ALPENA A meme trending on social media has come to Northeast Michigan, promoting local attractions and businesses and bringing people with different political ideologies together for fun, giggles, clicks, and shares. Past presidential candidate and self-proclaimed Democratic socialist U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, was captured seated in the Washington cold on Jan. 20 wearing a mask, puffy winter coat, knitted mittens, a less-than-thrilled look on his face during President Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony.

William Charles Cameron, 94 passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020 at MediLodge of Alpena. Bill was born in Bay City on July 12, 1926. He served in the United States Army First Infantry Division and later as Sergeant of the Guard during the Nuremberg Trials during World War II. Following the war, he graduated from Western Michigan University where he played football. He was a lifelong WMU Broncos fan. Bill worked in the insurance field his entire career – owning his own agency. Surviving are his wife Josephine, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Josi’s family, Sally Vanos, Pete and Stacey Cross and their families, and his beloved pets.
