After an investigation that took more than three years to complete, the Executive Yuan on Wednesday last week issued a report on Asia Cement Corp’s mining operations in Hualien County’s Sincheng Township (新城), sparking criticism among members of the investigative team.

Those opposed to the plan said that legal procedures were not observed, and they would continue to fight against the company’s efforts to mine marble in the area.
The Bsngan community, which comprises six indigenous groups living near the mining site, said that the referendum followed proper procedures, showing that 294 households voted for the mining extension, with 45 households against.
Voter turnout was also more than the required 50 percent threshold, with 374 of the 555 Bsngan
The Control Yuan urged the Ministry of Labor to improve its monitoring of compensation for migrant workers after a report found that many who became disabled as a result of occupational accidents in Taiwan did not claim disability payments after going home.
The Control Yuan made the request after approving an investigative report written by two of its 27 members.
Unclaimed compensation benefits owed to disabled migrant workers as a result of occupational accidents over the past 10 years totaled NT$40 million (US$1.44 million), Control Yuan member Wang Mei-yu (王美玉) told a news conference in Taipei on Tuesday.
