Insecurity: Things Are Getting From Bad To Worse – Lawmaker

  The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Army, Honourable Abdulrazak Namdas has lamented the deteriorating state of insecurity in the country, saying things are getting worse. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Namdas lamented the inadequate personnel of the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies. “I agree that things are getting from bad to worse but let us sit together and re-strategize and see how we can solve the problem,” he said. Worried by the worsening security situation, the lower chamber had on March 17 set up a special committee to come up with solutions to the security challenges in the country.

He said the records also indicated that 6,752 soldiers were discharged from the service in the last five years; while 25,655 soldiers had got enlisted within the same period. “The lack of commitment on the part of some soldiers is the major reason for voluntary discharge from service. The army disclosed to the committee that some soldiers, having seen the reality of going to the battle front, especially against Boko Haram usually voluntarily discharge from the service. “Those soldiers did not realize that engagement in the Army is more than a job; it entails personal commitment, regardless of welfare package. “The documents show that all the voluntarily discharged soldiers were Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO), ranging from Master Warrant Officer (MWO) to private (PTE).

Share FOLLOWING the sack of erstwhile service chiefs and appointment of their replacements by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, eminent Nigerians, political parties and some groups have set agenda for the new appointees.  A statement by the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, on Tuesday, had affirmed that the appointment of new service chiefs followed the acceptance by the president of the immediate resignation of the previous office-holders and their retirement from service.  President Buhari thanked the outgone service chiefs General Abayomi Olonisakin, Chief of Defence Staff; Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai; Chief of Army Staff; Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff and Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff for what he called their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country,” while wishing them well in their future endeavours.
