Some years give you nothing, fly by maybe a little too smoothly. In a century’s time who will remember 2019? Absolutely no one. 2020, however, will live in infamy. The story of the year was coronavirus. White knuckling through the quar we rediscovered social media as a connector, not a promoter. YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter boomed. We tried out some new things with Zoom, with Houseparty, with Clubhouse. People declared Instagram dead after Zuckerberg replaced the notifications button with a shopping bag. People declared Twitter dead when they rolled out…fleets? And everyone rushed to try TikTok when Donald Trump woke up sweaty and cranky one night and tweeted out that he was going to ban it. Of all the apps TikTok was the clear winner.

Nobody can rock Y2K fashion quite like she can.
A verified style icon in our book, Ricke describes her own clothing choices as 2000s Disney star mixed with local suburban mom , and can totally pull off the random thrift haul look. (I mean honestly, if I saw that sweater dress in a store window, I d keep walking.) Ricke has a 6th sense for fashion though, and can always make an outfit memorable.
But Caroline Ricke is more than just a fashionista (although to be fair, she s pretty great at that). Her hilarious videos rack up tens of thousands of views on Youtube, and her outlandish arrogant trust fund kid persona have gotten her fame on many social media platforms. Her Day in the Life of a Harvard Biomedical Engineering Student catipulted her to fame, gaining her thousands of fans, called Carolers.
Caroline Ricke didn’t even know what satire was until someone told her that’s what she was doing with her online rich girl persona. But sometimes you don’t have to know what you’re doing to totally nail it.
That seems to be the case with Ricke, who has carved out a niche of her own on TikTok. Even though the 21-year-old didn’t have cable TV growing up, her punny videos about being rich and fabulous feel like they were taken straight out of a movie from the ’90s or early aughts. Replace Alicia Silverstone or Reese Witherspoon or Hilary Duff with Ricke and her funky thrifted outfits and you would be hard pressed to tell a difference. “Just because I’m young and hot, doesn’t mean I have to be cuffed,” she quipps in one TikTok. “The only time I’ve been cuffed is when I got arrested for assault. It wasn’t my fault. Like, what’s wrong with seasoning my food?” Kelis’s “Milkshake” plays in the background, cementing the 2003 feel.
