then perhaps paying for some of this new spending down the road. a leading house conservative earlier sounded hopeful. i do think there are a lot of things we can both agree upon that at least start to address the spending problem and focus on getting economic growth, and that would be a good thing, but they haven t reached an agreement yet. i hope they do. reporter: he says he thinks the government ultimately needs to move on from going from crisis to crisis. what are democrats saying about where things stand? harry reid said they re not there yet in terms of a deal. democrats have been very cautious about what they say about this because, of course, nobody has read a final deal just yet, so they don t want to say they re for and it then ultimately end up against it. but a senate democrat expressed some optimism. with the potential budget gem from senator murray and congressman ryan what he was an opportunity to reduce these

party don t like. he put on the cpi on social security and agreed to some where around $400 billion in medicare cuts. he but entitlements on o the table in big, big numbers. john boehner was the guy who said a week ago we got to have a trillion in revenues and a trillion in cuts. that was the basic frame work for the deal. so then the decision in terms of where the tax rates would go up, whether it was 250 a year or 500 a year or what that thresh hold was, that was within the realm of achievement and the art of the possible. so we had the framework for the deal until the republicans in the house said no way, pulled the rug out from under the feet of john boehner and that is what made the deal impossible. how about the on the part of the extremists in the republican party it is my way or the highway. i certainly agree the game theory is a lot of art among house conservative. they don t recognize that the president is going to get his way. the question is how do we minimize that.
for those of you too young to remember that is a a 1970s movie. i want you to go to the window, stick your head out and yell, i m as mad as hell and i m not going to take this anymore! now that sounds like how a lot of people feel these days. this time, instead of the late actor peter finch, it was president barack obama who will people to take action. i m asking you all to make your voice heard. if you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your member of congress know. if you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message. and so they did. today more than 100 congressional websites crashed or threatened to. phones rang off the hook and letters and e-mails poured in. once again, the same old posturing went on and on. we ve all seen this movie before. in fact, we ve been watching it for weeks now. i ll have a lot more on this story in just a moment. but first, here s a look at the top stories i ll be telling but tonight. let s
