In the waning hours of Texas’ 87th legislative session, House Democrats staged a walk-out to kill a sweeping Republican effort at voter suppression. Little-noticed in the moment, the dramatic move also nixed a top priority of the business lobby for the last three years: a measure to stop Texas cities from passing virtually any local pro-labor policy.
the timing is more than noteworthy. plus the speaker is fresh from one of those public spats she s trying to discourage. four new democratic women in congress taking issue with the most powerful issue with american women in politics. alexandria ocasio-cortez proceeded to leave and they think she s too timid on impeachment, the speaker telling the new york times weekend, the squad has, quote, their public whatever and their twitter world, but she went on to say little influence when it comes to shaping the house agenda. a key pelosi deputy today says kumbaya. it s all puppies and rainbows. the house democratic caucus is a diverse family. we are a passionate family.

it s the house agenda. this is something that s been on our agenda long before the president ran for president. so, i mean, to act as if it s his agenda, it s our agenda, you understand? so, i mean, that s tomorrow is a photo op, okay? peter, this to me is unbelievable. this is not herbie the back bench senator. this is the chairman of senate foreign relations. granted, he is on his way out and is not going to stand for reelection, but branding tomorrow a photo op over 12 hours before the motorcade pulls up to the colonnade at the capital, and reminding everybody, hey, tax reform starts up here and not down there on pennsylvania avenue. well, look, senator corker obviously has decided that now that he s not running for reelection, he s going to say what he thinks and he s going to say it as bluntly as you just heard him say. is tomorrow a photo op? of course it is.
