The strategic goal of the Operation was to create a salient extending from the Netherlands toward Germany, and to die so rapidly before the Germans could coordinate a response (which they were extremely capable of accomplishing). Airborne troops were utilized with the aim of capturing and holding bridges crossing, as it turned out too many, river barriers.
