Saratoga National Historical park consists of 4100 acres. In 1948 as aished park within the National Park service system. In 1777, the british army had a plan in order to defeat the american rebellion. The plan was they would have an army leave canada and move south and capture the city of albany. From there, that army would be able to operate either in lower new york or throughout new england and attack American Forces that were fighting against them. The british set off from canada in june of 1777. After months and months of campaigning, they traveled hundreds of miles and eventually got here to saratoga battlefield, located 30 miles north of the city of albany. On the morning of the 19th of september 1777, the british army moved south in expectation of engaging the American Army, commanded by Horatio Gates in battle. The two armies collided here at freemans farm. It was not the bloodiest battle of the war, but one of the longest. It began at about 11 30 in the morning very near to w

History relating to the city specifically. The exhibit where going to be going through is our orientation exhibit tells the story of the city of Saratoga Springs all the way up to the 20th century. The first part of the exhibit where going to look at is Saratoga Springs and prehistoric times through the 18thcentury. At the most important things about saratoga is the spring water. It of americans visited here for hundreds of years because they felt that the water had healing properties. Built up from mineral deposits. Drank theme here, water, and also hunted in the areas around saratoga lake. This part of the exhibition has many artifacts related to native americans, some dating back to thousands of years that were found along the lake itself. When artifact we like to show is a piece of the deposit from high rock springs. If you visit today, it looks , volcanoes. Little it is a buildup of the Mineral Springs. Todays lecture is going to be on military aspects of the revolutionary war in the north and south. Next week, when we have our guest speaker she will be talking about the western campaigns in more detail. There are other aspects of the war, financing the war, womens participation that we will not get to today that we will be leaving for future classes. I wanted to start by talking about one of the best recent books on the American Revolution called the men who lost america. He argues that british generals are described as incompetent, in decisive, but he argues that these were competitive men in the midst accomplished professionals, and the reason why they failed was not due to a character flaw, but because they faced insurmountable obstacles fighting a war in america. I will lay out some of those obstacles. The first thing is diplomacy. In the seven years war britain had allies. I have asked the park service if they have seriously evaluated their capacity to ensure the safety of people who would attend such a rally. My name is kirk brandt, were delighted to have you here for the four evening book talks and i begin by thanking the Ford Motor Company for their partnership, and theyve done a lot for us including endowing this book talk series. Im personally able to welcome back nathaniel philbrick. And i asked to introduce him because whenever i do that, im struck by his bona fides as a true renaissance man. A ba from brown university, and he was a james duke fellow and a worked as an editor at sailing World Magazine and wrote and edited several sailing books, the yachting wind, and the parody. And hes the author of mayflower, as well as a book heart of the sea, National Book award for nonfiction. In 2010 he published a book called the last stand, it was New York Times best seller. It was a New York Times notable book and ala notable book and attempted into a 10 part tv series and adapted as we speak into a 10part series
