Harvard-educated economist, environmental activist, author, hemp farmer, and former two-time Green Party vice presidential candidate Winona LaDuke will kick off the 2022 University of Rhode Island Honors Colloquium Tuesday, Sept. 13 with “Restoring Indigenous Foodways in a Time of Climate Change: Lessons for the 8th Fire.” A Native American, she combines economic and environmental approaches to create a thriving and sustainable community for Indigenous populations across the country. .
The University of Rhode Island announced that Donald H. DeHayes, recently retired provost and vice president for academic affairs, made a gift to create an endowed fund to expand the URI Honors Program and inspire students to pursue unique research and learning opportunities. .

Sixteen University of Rhode Island students enrolled in this fall’s URI’s Honors Colloquium to enjoy seven seafood delicacies at Matunuck Oyster Bar and learn about ways to make sustainable seafood choices. They will sample Rhode Island seafood prepared in the Matunuck Oyster Bar while owner Perry Rasso and Barton Seaver, a renowned chef and international expert on sustainability and the role of food in resource management and public health, talk about the various seafoods they will enjoy and how the seafoods are harvested and/or farmed and their role in maintaining healthy fisheries. The event is not open to the public, but members of the media are invited to cover it. .
