Honiton Lions appeal for volunteers

Published: 12:00 PM April 16, 2021    Honiton Lions president Brian Richards, right, presents a cheque to the Royal British Legion s Paul Shaw - Credit: Honiton Lions Hard-working charity fundraisers at Honiton and District Lions Club have issued an appeal for new members to bolster their ranks and help them support more community projects. Brian Richards, club president, said that because of the pandemic the club’s fundraising had come to a halt but they were planning their popular classic car show on July 31 at the Honiton Market Charter Day at Allhallows field in Honiton. Honiton and District Lions Club was formed in May 1977 with 20 members from all walks of life. Their sponsorship was from Axminster Lions Club, with the late Lion Cliff Walton being their guiding Lion.

Honiton Litter Pickers blitz Tesco car park

Published: 3:00 PM April 16, 2021    Honiton Lions Club members joined the newly-formed Honiton Litter Pickers to clear up rubbish from the boundary of Tesco s car park - Credit: Honiton Litter Pickers An action group determined to make Honiton a tidier town have launched a blitz on litter that is blighting the community. The Honiton Litter Pickers  are a newly formed group, set up by Peter Coster. He felt action needed to be taken to reduce littering and he was encouraged by the Herald’s article on the litter-picking work that Kathy Layzell was doing. The group’s Rob Waldron said: “Now we have 160 members who want to make a difference in our community and the surrounding villages – and Kathy is also now in this group.”

Honiton Admiral Nurse fundraising success

Honiton s Admiral Nurse Fay Valentine has earned high praise for her work - Credit: Tim Dixon Honiton’s pioneering initiative to improve the lives of people living with dementia – and those who live with them – goes from strength to strength. It is now two years since Admiral Nurse Fay Valentine began working with families in and around the town – her vital and inspiring work made possible by a community fundraising campaign supported by the Midweek Herald. And now long-time supporters the Honiton Hospital and Community League of Friends have donated a further £100,000 to pay for another two years while the Honiton Admiral Nurse group has raised a further £50,000 – which means a second contract of three years can be offered.

Otter Windows charity champion hits new milestone

John Capon with his Otter Windows mobile sound system - Credit: Tim Dixon Charity  fundraiser John Capon, who usually spends most weekends throughout the spring, summer and autumn providing his famous mobile sound system free of charge to support good causes all over Devon, is gearing up ready for action when lockdown restrictions are eased. The big-hearted double glazing salesman – who has supported scores of charity groups and community projects in East Devon in recent years – says his diary is beginning to fill up with requests for him to take his mobile sound system to charity events all over the area in the coming months.
