China on Friday imposed sanctions on seven US individuals and entity, under Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, in response to the US penalties imposed on the Hong Kong officials over the crackdown on democracy in the semi-autonomous region. Reacting to it, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that these actions are the latest examples of how Beijing punishes private citizens, companies and civil society organizations as a way to send political signals and further illustrate the PRC s deteriorating investment climate and rising political risk .

China hits back at US sanctions threat

By ZHOU JIN | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2021-07-18 00:52 Share CLOSE China s Foreign Ministry on Saturday denounced and opposed the so-called Hong Kong Business Advisory issued by the United States government, and sanctions against Chinese officials, vowing to play along every step of the way until the very end if the US is bent on continuing with such tricks. The sanctions were imposed on seven officials of the Liaison Office of the Central People s Government in Hong Kong. The US move violated international law and basic norms governing international relations, and interfered in China s internal affairs, a spokesperson from the ministry said in a statement.
