To this tournament. everything is again scotland in a way. but sometimes that is the way we like it, you know? no one is expecting anything other than the tartan army. england know another win tonight will cement their spot in the last 16. gareth southgate more than understands the significance but wants his team to play the game, not the occasion. when we were growing up, the home internationals were one of the few games you saw live at the end of the season. and england scotland every year was a massive occasion. now it s played less regularly, obviously, lots of the players are friends within their clubs. we know the rivalry. but i think, i certainly haven t felt the need to build that up with the players. i want them to approach it like any other game of football and focus on playing well. a win for scotland tonight would breathe life into their quest. wales have all but booked their place in the next round. which home nation willjoin them?

Last night, head of the first meeting with scotland at a major tournament for a quarter of a century. it is the famously oldest and fiercest rivalries in football. gareth southgate, who played in the match 25 years ago, said he won t be building up this rivalry. when we were growing up, erm, the home internationals were one of the few games you saw live at the end of the season, and england/scotland every year was a massive occasion. now it s played less regularly. obviously lots of the players are friends within their clubs. we know the rivalry. but i think, yeah, i certainly haven t felt the need to build that up with the players. i want them to approach it like any other game of football, and focus on playing well. scotland boss steve clarke is boosted by the return of arsenal defender kieran tierney and knows a defeat would leave them in a perilous position in group d, after defeat in their opening match,

My first game at Goodison wasn t until 1974 as a 9-year-old so it s really interesting reading about football in a broad sense in earlier years from someone who was there at the time, especially from the lower leagues as they are never really reported on from those days. Chester in particular. Always had a soft spot for them as mum came from there.
