Abrahams: Moving to strategic position

Social Share Government is seeking to position Barbados as the hub for the Caribbean response to disasters, with the construction of a purpose-built warehouse and training facility. Minister of Home Affairs, Information and Public Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams, made this disclosure during a virtual courtesy call with new Head of the European Union Delegation to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean States, and CARICOM/CARIFORUM, Ambassador Malgorzata Wasilewska, today. Abrahams said Government was aiming to work in conjunction with the World Food Network and had received an offer from the United States Government for the construction of the facility. He said while the Ministry was “firming up” the disaster management aspects to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, preparations were restricted due to infrastructural limitations.

Businesses given green light to reopen

Social Share Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams on Tuesday night gave the go-ahead for business to resume in Barbados provided the appropriate cleaning of volcano ash was done to safeguard the health of both staff and patrons. Abrahams provided the update via an audio message to the nation. Barbados was closed for a national cleanup on Monday and only essential services were in operation on Tuesday as citizens and residents continued to sweep, mop, shovel and blast mounds of volcano ash that was dumped on the island after La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines erupted several times since last Friday.

Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams As difficult as it is for us, it is worse for Vincentians. Please pray for them. The MET Office has been able to predict 90 minutes ahead of the ash plumes. It is still difficult to plan even though we know 90 minutes ahead of dust plumes coming here. Today we started our clean up as things progress we will get better at dealing with it.
