Kathryn Chichenoff was the Emily Post of church etiquette

Here’s a salute to all of the mothers out there, living and departed, who exemplified the qualities of motherhood. This past year we’ve said final farewells to amazing Kodiak women who also were fantastic mothers. We’ve also had mothers who bid farewell to their children. The hardship and grief they suffered — realizing that their child would no longer call them “mom” — is a reflection of the deep love they had for their children.  Kathryn Chichenoff, who died last winter, and her husband, the late Sonny Chichenoff, sadly said that final farewell to their daughter Lori Ogle several years ago.

Valley News - For the dying and their loved ones, the pandemic has changed the process of death and grieving

For the dying and their loved ones, the pandemic has changed the process of death and grieving Modified: 4/3/2021 9:38:32 PM CLAREMONT After Natalia “Natasha” Brodeur died in a collision with a truck on Interstate 91 in late January 2020, friends and loved ones gathered to mourn her loss at the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church. “Being together was just such a powerful experience,” Irene Kacandes, Brodeur’s friend and a fellow congregant at the church on Sullivan Street in Claremont, said in an interview last week via Zoom. It was “such a way to honor her, but also to wrap our minds around ‘What does death really mean?’ ”

Ring in the new year and drop kick 2020 into the rear view mirror

T he toast might be virtual, the hugs on hold, but the sentiment is universal: Let’s ring in the new year and drop kick 2020 into the rear view mirror. Things definitely aren’t typical this New Year’s Eve. The First Night celebrations in the streets, the big dance parties, the packed concerts in music halls — most are paused as we head into 2021. And plans don’t just change from day to day but hour to hour. Still, there are bright spots — retooled shows, some splashes of color and online celebrations with fun, games and a sense of community.
