WSU office looking for student committee members

The WSU Office of Compliance and Civil Rights is now accepting applications for next year’s Student Feedback Committee. The committee consists of students across all WSU campuses who review and give feedback on CCR policies and procedures, said CCR Director Holly Ashkannejhad.  Members of the committee also give the office feedback about the general student’s perception of CCR and how to make the office welcoming for students, she said.  Ashkannejhad said the committee worked on a lot this past year, reviewing policies and giving feedback about updated policy changes issued by the U.S. Department of Education.  “[The committee] helped us craft how that would apply in our policy,” she said, “and worked with us on updating pamphlets and handouts that are provided to students that come to our office.”

OPINION: System must provide justice for sexual assault

Editor’s Note: One source in this story asked to remain anonymous to prevent retaliation against them and any interference with their student experience at WSU. An asterisk identifies a source’s name has been changed to protect their anonymity  My heart is broken: not only because of the statistics that have surfaced regarding the realities of sexual violence against both men and women within the last weeks, not only because I cannot count on one hand the number of women I know who are one in five not even because I am one in five. I am heartbroken because my university is not a safe place, not a trustworthy place. Not only do they not educate our student community in a meaningful way on the necessity of consent they don’t hold us accountable when we break the rules, when someone makes another woman one in five.

WSU office outlines complaint process

The WSU Office of Civil Rights and Compliance conducted 60 investigations out of the over 500 complaints received.  It is common for not all complaints to become investigations, but the office makes sure to contact each person who has made a complaint, said Holly Ashkannejhad, CCR director and Title IX coordinator. The office has three investigators, one lead investigator and one investigation program coordinator, who is someone that assists the other four investigators.  After a complaint is filed, the complainant who is the person who made the complaint will have a consultation with an investigator. During this point, complainants are asked about the initial complaint, whether they want to make a formal complaint and how that process would look like, she said.
