Big surf puts on a show for beachgoers | News, Sports, Jobs

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo A massive set of waves pounds the shore at Ho’okipa Beach Park as surf watchers stand on the point for a closer look. Ho’okipa and Baldwin beach parks were closed by the county over the weekend due to monster waves. However, another northwest swell was building overnight and through this morning for the north shores of Maui and Molokai and the west shore of Molokai, according to the National Weather Service. A high-surf warning remained in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday predicting waves of 30 to 40 feet on the north and 15 to 20 feet on the west. The service warned of ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, strong breaking waves and powerful longshore and rip currents. Maui Fire Department Jet Ski units along the north and west shores worked overtime Saturday due to a high volume of rescue calls tied to large surf, a spokesman said Sunday.
