Hispanic leaders are pushing the Biden administration to go further in its efforts to diversify the top levels of government, in hopes of seeing more Hispanic appointees in public offices.
A coalition of grassroots immigrant groups and advocates are calling on the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) to push for immigration reform, after the group failed to embrace the issue in congressional negotiations last year.
they re licking their lips at the chance to go up against democrats this november because they feel good about what they saw in last night s results. thank you so much. joining me now to continue our conversation, is norma torres, a member of the hispanic congressional caucus. what s your understanding of where things stands in terms of finding an agreement on the reconciliation bill? it s good to see you this morning, jose. i think we have an agreement when it comes to house members of congress. we are ready to vote for this bill. the issue has always been that we are negotiating within our party. that the republicans have been absent from the table. they refuse to allow anything that might make the president or the democrats look good. their job is to obstruct.
where do thing stands with the bipartisan infrastructure bill. where we are at, we are working on finalizing the language, so that we all know on the house side exactly what s in the bill and that is what we are doing. we want to make sure that we have all the language in there. that we are addressing issues with our senate colleagues. there are discussions going on between the house and the senate. and in the progressive caucus and the hispanic congressional caucus and the democratic caucus, you are feeling a sense of mechanism and determination to get things done. the other thing is, we are energized by what is in there. there s been a lot of agreement on many key issues and we are energized to talk about what s in that bill. and i would love to talk more about that. well, you and i can talk about that, because i m really interested in your perspective. i want to say, what are the issues that for you are
prohibit capital punishment was introduced this week by ayanna pressley. do you see democrats taking this up as a priority? and by democracy, i mean the congressional black caucus, since you and congresswoman bush both drew the line from jim crow to what happened this week, congresswoman. absolutely. the congressional black caucus hopefully the progressive caucus will join in with us, and the hispanic congressional caucus. we all need to join forces in this because what happens is, if you study or look at the capital punishment situation, if an african-american or a brown person kills an african-american or brown person, they stand a very, very small chance of getting the death penalty. it is when you kill someone white that the death penalty is very likely going to be your sentence. and killing this gentleman, this
