From sewer sludge to paid family leave to no-tax-hike pledges, a wide range of issues dominate the respective priorities of Allegheny County Council candidates facing off Tuesday. Six council races are on the general election ballot, but just two are contested. Joe Wise, a Moon Township Republican, died on Saturday.
Five candidates will vie for four open Fox Chapel council seats in the Nov. 2 general election. One Democrat and four Republicans are seeking four-year terms, according to Allegheny County Office of Elections records. Two incumbents are seeking reelection, and three newcomers are in the race. Here are the responses
WASHINGTON â The Board of Selectmen, meeting Thursday, May 13, heard from Edwin Matthews, president of the Shepaug River Association, who addressed an agreement negotiated with Waterbury regarding management of that cityâs water system and its impact on the Shepaug River.
Since the agreement was signed in 2005, the river association has hired a hydraulic expert every three years to analyze Waterburyâs performance to produce a detailed report to demonstrate issues such as water conservation.
Mr. Matthews said the city wastes about 30 percent of its water, for which it receives no revenue, due to leaks. âThatâs a shame.â
He shared a summary of issues and recommended hiring a consultant to defend the town and river. âWhat we have now is an opportunity to coach Waterbury into adopting water conservation efforts⦠which will be essential to saving the river.â
