isn t that the point, that many women can t rely on a husband like jay-z? i think it s about partners. sure they have money, and this child will go without nothing in its entire life. for them and their partnership, it s about how they protected their love in the public square. they don t really talk about one another very much in interviews. they ve been protective of their relationship and marriage, and kept private things private. that s important, too. so when you see them together, it really is about a partnership, about a marriage, and it s something that i think we can point to you know, things like high school dropout rates, things like, you know, early drug using or teenage pregnancy, all those things that happen when a father is absent.

reporter: there is some good news. child and teen death rates are down. so are teenage pregnancies and high school dropout rates. but that s small comfort to 15-year-old gavi who dreamed of becoming a psychologist and now isn t even sure where she ll be for her junior year. a lot of people going through this. it s just really hard. joining me now, the reverend jesse jackson, president of the rainbow push coalition. reverend, good to see you. and you wrote a commentary about poverty and i just want to read a part of it, which was particularly stunning, i thought. the poor are virtually invisible in our political debate. democrats talk about saving the middle class, while republicans fret about protecting the job creators. as i look at this family, the hidalgos and we talked to the people in line at the jobs fair that they re having now in atlanta, these are not the chronically poor. these are not homeless.

Is it wrong to limit the number of hours a high school kid, who is supposed to be studying in school, two or three hours i don t have a problem with that. well, that s what we re talking about here. what i really applaud, and i think you would do, it would be a good thing to have more 16-year-old and 17-year-old and 18-year-olds working. slow down a little bit. i used to talk like you. you still do. no, i don t. i slowed down so people can think when i m talking. why do you think business want to increase the number of hours kids can work in high school until 11:00 at night instead of 10:00 and increased it from 20 to 24 hours a week? isn t 20 hours enough to work for a kid? it is enough. and 20 hours a week is the cutoff point at which high school dropout rates increase after 20 hours a week. you can t study after that. you can t study. grades go down. i don t have a problem with that. i agree with you on that. what about the 11:00 at night rule? i think that
