Construction on Herkimer County Jail completed
Now that construction of the Herkimer County Jail is finished, taxpayers should start to see a reduction of costs.

Herkimer County officials cut a red ribbon to commemorate the completion of the construction phase of the Herkimer County Jail, but they’ll be cutting a good deal of red tape that plagued the old jail. Herkimer County Legislative Chairman Vincent Buono explains. It just makes sense because of the close proximity to the courts, the county building, and there’s a lot of departments that play into the sheriff’s department and corrections. Whether it be social services, mental health, public health, probation, the D.A., the courts within a half a mile they’re at those offices.

Man Facing Drug And Weapons Charges Following Traffic Stop
A Whitesboro man is facing numerous charges following a traffic stop in the Town of Columbia.
State Police say they allegedly found a loaded semi-automatic “Ghost Gun” with a 17 round capacity magazine, about two pounds of marijuana, cocaine and several drug paraphernalia items during the traffic stop.
30-year old Justin Murray is facing charges including criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Murray was arraigned and sent to the Herkimer County Jail on $20,000 cash bail.
Herkimer County Jail closer to opening
Inspectors from the New York State Codes Department are working on a certificate of occupancy for the Herkimer County Jail.

It’s been decades in the making, but the Herkimer County Jail is getting close to opening. Herkimer County Sheriff Scott Scherer talked about how the old jail is outdated and has gone through a number of issues. We went through water main break issues, generator issues, boiler issues, heat exchange issues, the footprint of the facility, windows, mold, just ….there’s a lot of issues with our old facility.
