Alberta is the first province in Canada to end these orders, but Shandro said every jurisdiction in the country will be moving in that direction.
“I think other provinces know this will be the inevitable next step,” he said.
On Wednesday, Hinshaw announced that quarantining for people who are close contacts of COVID-19 cases would no longer be mandatory as of Thursday. Starting Aug. 16, Albertans who test positive themselves will no longer be legally required to isolate. Provincial masking orders on transit, in taxis or ride sharing will expire on that day as well.

The official goal, beginning Aug. 16, is to place COVID-19 on the same level as seasonal flu, with roughly similar measures for containment.
“With strong vaccine uptake, Alberta will gradually bring COVID-19 measures in line with other respiratory viruses to ensure health system capacity for the fall,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, said Wednesday..
“While COVID-19 cases may rise in the coming months, a surge of hospitalizations and other severe outcomes is much less likely thanks to vaccines,” Hinshaw added.
