got this sexual harassment on both sides, not equivalent, but roy moore front and center, robert costa. roy moore is front and center, and republicans are worried that he could lose that race or win that race, it s a problem for them. on taxes, though, i don t buy the confidence yet based on my reporting. you ve got senator ron johnson of wisconsin they think they ve got him. they think they have a fix for him on small businesses. but you talk about trickle-down economics, that still remains the core of the republican party that reagan orthodoxy, but this is a change party. look at the discussions in the senate. they re concerned about how this bill adds to the deficit, they re concerned as being too pro wall street heading into 2018. mcconnell still has some work to do. not only that, it has also become a proxy health care fight again, because you again have republicans talking about cutting medicare, cutting medicaid. this would trigger sequestration. you have republicans e
themself. if there was a hearing for a new attorney general, the first question that s going to be asked is are you going to fire the special counsel. i can t imagine a scenario where anybody who would be leaning towards getting rid of the special counsel would be able to be confirmed. but the president has also tweeted some nasty things about the current deputy attorney general. so i do think it s possible that they would look to the number three rachel brand instead of the deputy to come into that position. yeah, if there were a nomination for a new attorney general, the confirmation hearings before the senate, that could be lively indeed. every other questioner, namely a democrat would make it all about the russia investigation. we ll see if that happens. we re all waiting to see what the president has to say if anything. a lot of pressure on him to speak out finally on this issue. guys, thank you very much. carrie and david. let s get to the tax fight on capitol hill right no
which is a big, big deal. at least that s what we re trying to do. and ali, the differences between these two bills and talking to senators over here is starting to give me the feeling like this skinny repeal bill, remember that in the health care fight, the idea this senate had to pass something to get to conference with the house and they would fight it out later. it s starting to feel a little bit like the house and senate are going to pass some different looking bill ifs they pass anything at all and fight it out later. that the conference part of this is going to be interesting to watch if we get that far. the problem, john, is that that the stuff they re going to have to fight out in conference is the very stuff that is controversial. the state and local tax deductions. there are no democratic senators in the high tax states. so they don t care they re not going to lose anything. and this is where it becomes a problem. what do you see happening here? well, i see a big p
the stakes couldn t be any higher. the president wants a win, he needs a win after failing on health care, and so he really wants to see taxes get done. now, of course, his strategy has been a bit different than we saw during the health care fight. the president has been out on the road really trying to sell this tax proposal to voters, the broad outlines of it, at least. and he s been working the phones with lawmakers, holding meetings here at the white house, so he s been putting the pressure on leading up to his big asia trip. of course, the nitty-gritty will come down to these next few days and weeks, and for the next chung of tha thung chunk of that, he s going to be overseas, andrea. and the property tax side is a huge change. that is going to be hugely controversial. also i want to talk to you and get reaction as well from kasie hunt on the hill. to jerome powell, a relatively safe choice, a republican, not an economist, a fed governor?
all of them are saying let this progress continue. republicans reportedly making last minute changes to the tax bill before the plan to release tomorrow. have you heard any details about the changes or the plan? one thing republicans have learned from the health care fight is it is easier to deal with this before the plan becomes public than to fight things out. we are hearing that there has been kind of a compromise offer to the republicans from high tax states who were so worried about the state and local tax deduction being wiped out. that we hear will be going away. they will keep a write off for property tax, sort of a compromise deal to hopefully keep those nine or ten republican house members on board with this deal. we are hearing that the white house does not want to budge on the 20% corporate tax rate. one thing was the idea that they would phase this in. the white house saying we want to get this done right away. we are hearing the top rate for
