Dear Editor:
I write in support of Charlie Culbertson’s candidacy for Third Selectman in Alna. I find his thinking in concert with my own on two very important issues: rivers and schools.
It might be said that my soul is embedded in the ebb and flow of the Sheepscot River. In the 1930s, I learned to swim in the Sheepscot River; in the ’40s to row a dinghy; in the ’50s I learned to fish; in the ’60s to shoot ducks; and in more recent years, to paddle a kayak and revere the eagles, kingfishers, otters and mink … and ducks.

Dear Editor:
I am writing to encourage my fellow Alna residents to vote no on Article 27, an amendment that would seriously weaken Alna s Shoreland Zoning Ordinance.
Our well-crafted 1993 Ordinance is the end product of many stakeholders and countless hours of local debate. It has stood the test of time as our primary safeguard for the ecological health and natural beauty of Alna s most precious resource: our much loved Sheepscot River.
Our town’s long tradition of river stewardship has been bolstered recently by numerous conservation groups investing over two million dollars in river restoration, mostly to remove dams and restore sea run fish populations. The heavily forested river bank portion of our 63-mile river flowing from Head Tide to Sheepscot Cross Road is largely undeveloped, giving it a serene, wild quality that is unique in Midcoast Maine. Here, you can unplug and unwind, watch for eagles, otters, and sturgeon, and particularl

Dear Editor:
Between Sheepscot Falls and Head Tide, Alna and Newcastle residents enjoy a quiet stretch of undeveloped Sheepscot River estuary. The vegetation along the river’s edge is thriving; it provides habitat for fish and waterfowl; it filters runoff to sustain water quality. It makes this one of the cleanest rivers in the state, and it contributes to the character of the place we share as neighbors.
On Dec. 10, the Alna Planning Board voted for change. They agreed to allow a stone and gravel ramp and military-grade roll-out mat in the shoreland zone for private use. We know how that decision will benefit one individual. But the planning board has yet to explain how their decision benefits us as a community.
