A man cannot be held guilty for abetment of his wife's suicide within seven years of marriage unless there is cogent evidence of harassment or cruelty, the Supreme Court has said.
The Supreme Court said that to convict a person under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC, there has to be a clear "mens rea" (criminal intent) to commit the offence.
