Governor meets with NEA leaders amid protests

JONESBORO — As protesters waved signs outside, Gov. Asa Hutchinson met with local health authorities and elected officials Thursday at the Red Wolf Convention Center to discuss the local fight against the spread of the coronavirus. “It’s actually startling whenever you hear the health care experts within that room say they expect to have an increased acceleration of new COVID cases in the coming weeks,” Hutchinson told reporters. “And whenever we’re already at a high level in Arkansas with the large number of deaths each day, new cases and stretched hospitalizations, that catches my attention.” Hutchinson commended the local hospitals for coordinating patient management, but hospital administrators made clear the stress is getting worse.
