O Brien wins women s super-G at U S nationals, Ross says goodbye as racing resumes

Kelsey Brunner/The Aspen Times Nina O’Brien added to her career nationals haul and Laurenne Ross again said goodbye as the U.S. Alpine Championships got back to racing with the women’s super-G on Tuesday at Aspen Highlands. O’Brien, a native Californian, took the super-G national championship with a time of 1 minute, 15.78 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of runner-up Hannah Saethereng of Norway. Former University of Denver ski racer Storm Klomhaus was third, a full 1.13 back of O’Brien. More of a technical specialist, the 23-year-old O’Brien was competing in her first super-G since the 2019 nationals. She avoided any rust to win her eighth career national championship.

Photo courtesy of University of Utah After the RMISA regular season came to a close, teams remained in Utah for a week of training prior to the RMISA championships at Park City Mountain Resort. Westminster took the win for the alpine team in the regional championship race, while solid skiing and career-first podiums were shared across teams.  Giant slalom Following the postponement of the final RMISA men’s GS race due to unsafe conditions, the men competed first on the morning of Feb. 18. The early morning competition wasn’t a FIS-U or USSA race, but would count as an official RMISA race to be used in the RMISA team standings and NCAA qualification.
