what else have we learned? hallie, the tobys had an initial appearance in a west virginia courtroom, each wearing orange prison jumpsuits with hands cuffed, chains around their waist. there were two separate hearings with jonathan appearing first, followed by his wife. a judge explained the charges against them and read them their rights. the pair has been in jail since they were arrested saturday. they will remain there at least until detention hearing scheduled for friday. the justice department told the judge they were a flight risk, given the charges against them carry life terms. no lawyers appeared with the couple at these hearings and it looks like they will have public defenders appointed to represent them. but you re absolutely right. the hearing obviously didn t answer the big questions at the heart of this case, including what motivated this highly educated middle class couple to allegedly seek to sell state secrets and which country were they trying to sell them to? they
weisselberg flips or if he doesn t, are they going to be able to get to that main event tristan is talking about. we don t know that yet. stand by. we do have more details of what is going on inside the courtroom from our correspondent, paula reid. so let me bring her in. paula, what have you learned from what is happening inside? reporter: it is really interesting hearing all of the details coming out of the courtroom. the first thing that really struck me, alisyn, is the fact weisselberg entered the courtroom with his hands cuffed. just remember at the center of these allegations they re tax crimes, not a violent offense. they actually took the cuffs off as he sat down at the defense table and we re getting more information about the allegations. that s what we talked about earlier, we would be watching for. here prosecutors are alleging a 15-year tax scheme. these charges include 15 felony counts including a scheme to defraud, conspiracy, grand larsenie and falsifying tax record
what happened. brooke, we re getting word that the three men the congressman, his 25-year-old son cameron and cameron s soon to be father-in-law all pleaded not guilty to those 13 counts of securities fraud, wire fraud and lying to the fbi. but i want to bring in mark morales was inside the courthouse when the men were standing before the judge. can you paint a picture of what their demeanor was? they were fairly calm. they came out. christopher collins was wearing a dark blue suit, white shirt, no tie. neither one of them had their hands cuffed in front of them. they all addressed the judge when the judge asked them how they pled. christopher collins said i plead not guilty and went down the line, not guilty. they read the documents and understood what their charges were. the simple not guilty. we ve seen statements from the congressman and seen them from the son s attorney as well. about what the father-in-law s son? not in the at the court.
you just got to listen to him and have patience with him because he flips like that. it s some people who i have zero tolerance for, and there s some people that i have about 10% tolerance for. i don t trust him when he has his hands cuffed in the front of him. i stand here like this because i don t trust him. he s unpredictable. you never know what he s going to do. he can be be smiling and be your best friend, then turn around and he s ready to swing. melvin gathers is in distribution segregation after he became agitated and grabbed a phone from the officer s desk and smashed it on the floor. i got upset. i asked to speak to the sarge. then it became the demand. the demand wasn t carried out. i took the phone and chucked it, and then it shattered. gathers was given 60 days in segregation, considered a long time for anyone. jail officials say it was because the phone incident came after an even more serious violation.
