Child sexual abuse cases are often preceded by sexual grooming, ASEAN coordinator of Embassy of the United States of America (US) in Brunei Darussalam Marc Porter said.
This practice is defined as a preliminary process whereby the perpetrator gains the trust of the victim with the intent of abusing the victim sexually, he said.
Porter made these comments in his welcoming remarks during an awareness-raising programme on sexual grooming and incest for students of Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School in Tutong District on April 10.
“Understanding sexual grooming and what perpetrators do to a vulnerable child can help prevent sexual abuse before it occurs,” he said.
