Congress slams Election Commission for reducing ban on BJP s Himanta Biswa Sarma

Synopsis
The poll panel on Friday had barred Sarma from campaigning for 48 hours on charges of threatening opposition leader Hagrama Mohilary of the Bodoland People s Front. However, in less than 24 hours the poll panel on Saturday in a fresh order gave relief to Sarma by reducing his ban from campaigning in Assam Assembly polls to 24 hours.

Targeting the poll panel, Kumar said that even after Sarma admitted to wrong doing, his punishment period has been reduced, which is unheard of in any judicial or quasi judicial proceeding without notice to the complainant.

New Delhi: Today is the last day of poll campaign in three states -Assam, Tamil Nadu and Kerala- and Puducherry, a union territory. As Assam and Bengal vote for third phase on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will vote in a single phase.
In Kerala, more than 27 lakh people are eligible to vote across the state. The ruling Left Democratic Front, the United Democratic Front, of which the Congress is a part, and the BJP are the three key contenders that are figthing in all 140 constituencies.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was elected as Lok Sabha MP from Kerala s Wayanad in 2019, will be campaigning today in the southern state.
