GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ulfa (I) chief Paresh Baruah have separately said they are seeing a “new ray of hope” for resolving the more than four decades old militancy problem in the state, which has claimed thousands of lives.
On Tuesday, Sarma visited the parents of Ritul Saikia, an ONGC employee who is being held in captivity by Ulfa (I), at Titabor and said the government is making all efforts to secure the safe return of Saikia to his home. He added that the three month ceasefire announcement by Baruah was a positive sign.
“I will embrace with open arms any ray of hope that appears on the horizon. I think Paresh Baruah should move a peace talks proposal,” Sarma said. Hours later, Baruah called up media houses to acknowledge Sarma’s “bold” initiative and assured that abducted ONGC personnel Ritul Saikia would soon be in his home.
