The Ministry of National Defense is reportedly considering using a portion of Provincial Highway No. 9 in Taitung County as an emergency runway, following calls last month for a contingency landing strip better protected from Chinese missiles. CNA photo Jan. 10, 2021 Taipei, Jan. 10 (CNA) The season lowest temperature was recorded in northern Taiwan s Miaoli County early Sunday at 3.4 degrees Celsius, as a cold surge gripped the country, according to weather expert Wu Der-rong (吳德榮). The lowest temperature seen in flat parts of the country during this winter was recorded at 6:23 a.m. Sunday in Miaoli s Gongguan Township, said Wu, an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University. As of 5 a.m., the lowest temperatures in northern, central and southern Taiwan remained at around 6 degrees, while the lows in the east was staying around 8 degrees, Wu said.
