The solutions nature provides: how can hotels contribute and benefit? – Hospitality Net World Panel

share this viewpoint This viewpoint was created byWilly Legrand, Professor of Hospitality Management at the IU International University of Applied Sciences, Germany The solutions nature provides: how can hotels contribute and benefit? Nature and its ecosystem services are at the center of the hospitality business proposition: from food and beverage offers to guests enjoyment of natural landscape at a destination. Nature is not only a capital component available to businesses, but a source of solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change and protect biodiversity while ensuring the well-being of staff and guests alike. Nature is a prerequisite for a successful business, however, a 40% drop in natural capital per person has been recoded over the past two decades (Dasgupta, 2021). Burning though this inventory of natural capital without a regeneration plan should result in alarm bells ringing. As the

Best of travel: South Africa's finest nature reserves and safari

••• There’s nothing particularly unusual for those used to a life of luxury about a five-star pool villa, except when said pool has a warthog drinking from it. My villa fronts straight onto the wild South African bush. We’re instructed not to step outside after dark, not even for a second, in case we get eaten. But this warthog is a friendly sort. She’s nonplussed that I’m lounging in the cool water before she scampers off in search of lunch. Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is situated in the middle of a private game reserve in Sabi Sands, flanked by Kruger National Park. These 400 square miles of land and the thousands of unfenced hectares beyond are home to lion, leopard, cheetah, hippo and rhino, aka the safari Big Five. Sculpted into a slope overlooking a natural watering hole, accessed via a hidden corridor and gazing onto uninterrupted bushveld, the Earth Lodge looks like a Brutalist Bond lair and has been described as the most environmentally-sensitive lodge in Africa.

The Most Luxurious Eco-Friendly Hotels

Pikaia Lodge, Galapagos Islands Pikaia Lodge has worked closely with the Ecuadorian government to ensure that it can welcome eco-tourists without risking harming the local environment and wildlife / ©Pikaia Lodge From its construction to its daily operations, environmental consciousness is ingrained into Pikaia Lodge. Operating at a fully carbon-neutral status, the lodge successfully proves that the five-star comforts enjoyed at luxury hotels need not be sacrificed for the sake of sustainability. The lodge itself is made of only the most environmentally friendly building materials, such as the hand-collected local Galapagos lava stone tiles that line many of the floors and walls. The building is designed to provide for itself where possible; solar paneling generates energy to power the lodge, the roof collects rainwater for purification, and the light-colored roofing prevents interior heat buildup, mitigating the need for air conditioning in the spacious and modern guest rooms.
