of mind and it s all raising more questions about the potential charges against his father. here s cnn s senior national correspondent, ed lavandera. reporter: in the mayhem of the shooting at the highland park fourth of july parade, new details are emerging from a witness that provided key surveillance video which helped identify the alleged shooter. see people running, he s walking. reporter: it was a camera connected to a building owned by habim. he captured the alleyway the shooter used. started looking at the camera here. he was on the film at 10:07 into the alley. and 10:14 coming out. when he comes out, he s holding an orange bag in the rifle butt, something in the bag hits the guardrail and drops. and he looks at it and that s when we caught him on his camera so we knew who it was and then he left. reporter: newly released documents paint the picture of a depressed teenager with a history of drug use and a home life marked by domestic incidents. a report fro

we begin with the latest developments in the mass shooting in illinois. six killed, 38 injured when a gunman opened fire at a fourth of july parade in highland park. that is an affluent suburb of chicago. this video shows a band playing as people begin to run. other footage caught the jarring sound of gunfire. [ gunfire ] imagine the shock and confusion. maybe it was fireworks, they could rightly think. no, those were gunshots. the series of shots you heard followed by a second round of shooting that lasted about 7 seconds. the gunman was on a rooftop with a high-powered rifle. parade-goers scattering in all directions once they realized what was happening. you see a band running there. the crowd left behind chairs, toys, baby strollers, and blankets. here s one witness describing that scene. a few minutes into the parade started, like, the marching band had just passed, i heard a subsequent pop, pop, pop, all in quick succession. i thought to myself, that s not that
the suspect dressed in women s clothing. that is the disguise he used to try to get away after the shooting. police say this is something that had been planned for several weeks. the gunman used that disguise to try to sleep through the crowd. but investigators say he left behind a legally purchased assault rifle that the atf was able to trace to this person of interest now, who is behind bars as we speak, not yet charged. police say he fired off more than 70 rounds from a roof overlooking the parade. as we are learning more about some of the six victims killed and the nearly 50 others hurt by the gunshots and all the way hospital after this happened. we expect another update in just about an hour. you have the white house and all federal buildings with flags flying at half staff in memory of the highland park victims. we have a lot to get to over the next 60 minutes. cathy park is in illinois, pete williams, mike is covering the white house and we are joined by clint who
