Picture from Twitter A Conservative candidate standing in both the district and county elections has responded to revelations that he has a criminal conviction for blackmail. Nick Housden - who is hoping to represent the Stonehouse ward on both Stroud District Council and Gloucestershire County Council - received a two year suspended prison sentence in 2013. Mr Housden, who was 22 at the time, admitted a charge of demanding £2,000 with menace from a businessman in 2011. The conviction came to light after a cutting from Private Eye highlighting the case was circulated on social media last week.

The Prime Minister came to Stroud on Monday to launch the Government’s Mortgage Guarantee Scheme that will allow home buyers to get on the property ladder with only a 5 per cent deposit. Boris spent several hours at the Great Oldbury housing development in Stonehouse talking with homeowners and construction workers and he was on great form. The idea of the scheme is for the government to offer lenders the guarantee they need to provide mortgages that cover the other 95 per cent, subject to the usual affordability checks. The scheme is available lenders such as Lloyds, Santander, Barclays, HSBC and NatWest. Virgin Money will also join the scheme next month.

PM unable to name Conservative regional mayor during visit to South West

Boris Johnson appeared unable to name the current West of England mayor, despite the regional leader being a Conservative. The Prime Minister was asked during a campaign visit to Gloucestershire if he was able to name Tim Bowles, the incumbent mayor who was elected to the post in 2017. Mr Bowles became the first metro mayor for the West of England Combined Authority, made up of three of the councils in the region – Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. The PM and Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie met staff at the site to mark the launch of the 95% mortgage guarantee scheme. The scheme, aimed at homebuyers with low deposit or limited equity allows people to purchase properties with as little as a 5% deposit. However, the scheme came under scrutiny today when it was revealed that most of the major banks have not yet agreed to lend for purchases of new builds, like those at the Barratt homes site in Stonehouse. Although Mr Johnson said: “Most of the banks are going to back the scheme.”
