In September of 1894, five sailors lost their lives when a schooner barge, the Ironton, had a catastrophic collision with the steamer Ohio in what was known as Lake Huron’s “Shipwreck Alley.”
Searchers have found the wreck of the freight schooner that plunged to the lake’s bottom in 1894 after colliding with another vessel in rough seas, killing five crewmen.
Even for the Thunder Bay area, a perilous swath of northern Lake Huron off the Michigan coast that has devoured many a ship, the Ironton s fate seems particularly cruel.
