source of all of our wealth, our livable planet. it s so interesting. and he never wanted to be a billionaire. this is a guy that has significant money that i assume could make a real impact. however, we re talking about the climate crisis. this is a global problem. what kind of impact could $100 million a year actually have? you know, it s a drop in the bucket given the scale, the enormity of what needs to be done out there. it s all how you spend it, right? he has, patagonia has over 1,000 different grass roots organizations that they send grants to and support. they hope the customers will not just buy their stuff but support these, as well. this is bird watchers or people protecting parks or regenerative farmers or fishermen, trying to get a coalition of people who love the outdoors and depend on it, to think about consumption in a different way. that can have as big an impact as throwing at a carbon capture
we were very intentional about starting first and foremost with who are the voters that can be vote mated by this issue, and how do we communicate with them. we approached this less from a position of partisan angle, but really, about what are the values that kansans hold around not just abortion, but around what it means to be a kansas, personal autonomy and personal liberty and freedom and partisanship was a secondary factor, we knew we needed to develop messages and strategies that cut across the political spectrum and that is everything from the way that we communicated with voters on television, in digital ad, ads to the field programs that we oning, talking to voters really across the state. . we had a very successful partner-driven field operation, where we built a broad coalition of grass roots organizations that were already doing the work, and it wasn t just your traditional partners on reproductive rights issues, we
0 by nearly 20 points. and what is remarkable about the outcome is that kansas republicans did everything they possibly could to stack the deck in their favor. for starters, they scheduled the vote during a typically aug of during the general election, in november, because yesterday s primary featured mostly republican candidates running against each other and therefore would presumably attract mostly republican voters. they made the language of the ballot measure so dense and confusing that the normal person would be hard-pressed to deciph ter at first glance what a yes or a no vote even meant. republican groups barraged out misleading text messages that meant it sound like yes would protect a woman s right to choose when in fact, the opposite was true. voter turnout was massive. far from the usual trickle of voters for an august primary in a midterm year. turnout approached presidential election levels. and the votes to defeat the anti-abortion measure didn t just come from the urban
results that again there are inequities and disparities. as you said, this is far beyond oakland and i think only oakland and boston have been the two cities that have made this type of declaration. do you see this expanding nationwide? well, i think that it can expand nationwide if we see interventions again from grass roots organizations who are already working on economic development on housing and security, on food insecurity, to getting our populations educated. measure that. when you see the outcomes from that, when you see people getting engaged and being part of the solution, then i think that other jurisdictions will take it up. and i also think that we need to do an economic analysis. it is pretty clear when you lift up economic development, education, give people a place to live, they become productive members of society and our economy will flourish therefore. so honestly, i don t know if other jurisdictions will take it up before they see this kind of
reid from yet another journalist who has covered him since 1986. we turn now to capitol hill, the marking of one year since the attack on the capitol has sparked a fresh push on voting rights legislation. let s go to nbc s julie tsirkin joining us from capitol hill. could this week be a critical one in determining any fate of voting rights legislation? reporter: yeah, alex, it s going to be a big week coming up here in the senate. it s when the senate will start to take up one of the pieces of legislation to reform voting rights known as the freedom to vote act. that, of course, had senator joe manchin s hand on it. he co-authored it when the senate was unable to pass a bigger, more reformative piece of legislation earlier in the summer without him. january 6th, the one-year anniversary, we saw countless speeches from senate democrats who tied in the need to pass voting rights election reforms as a measure to address january 6th to make sure that something like that never happens h
