Instead, the 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back, out of Mansfield Timberview High School (Mansfield, Texas), surprised many by selecting Oregon over offers from Arizona State, Auburn, California, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, USC, Utah and others:

And what a narrative-changing pledge that commitment would be.
Simply put, over the past few years - even with five-star defensive lineman Kayvon Thibodeaux - Oregon’s defensive line recruiting success has lagged behind the rest of the roster.
Further, defensive line coach Joe Salave’a has struggled a bit on the recruiting trail and doesn’t get credit for three biggest defensive line “gets” of his tenure - Thibodeaux (Keith Heyward, Mario Cristobal), Keanu Williams (credited a group effort, Don Johnson Jr.) and class of 2022 defensive end Gracen Halton (Jim Mastro).

On Monday, 247Sports four-star prospect Gracen Halton, the nation’s No. 11 defensive end in 2022, shared his experience as a recruit, specifically that programs recruiting negatively against Oregon made him all the more certain Eugene was his future home.
“It was obvious to me Oregon was the choice because a lot of the other schools were talking down on Oregon and Oregon talked about nothing but Oregon,” he wrote.

The West Coast is known for producing skill-position players at a high rate, but offensive and defensive linemen remain a scarcity year in, year out.
During Mario Cristobal’s tenure as Oregon Ducks coach, however, Oregon has largely solved that issue on the offensive side of the ball, landing the majority of elite offensive line talent in the West region while supplementing that group with players from across the country.
While defensive line recruiting has not been as successful, the Ducks appear to be making significant strides.
