When the film Malcolm & Marie was announced, I presumed it had to do something with the human rights activist, since Denzel Washington, the father of this film’s lead John David Washington, played the titular lead in the film Malcolm X. Then, the promotional materials arrived and proved me wrong. But interestingly, Malcolm & Marie does quote the 1992 film’s director Spike Lee more than a couple of times as well as some prolific Black filmmakers of this century. Unfortunately, these are the only sequences that stand out in this 200-minute talkathon.

Manjima Mohan used the lockdown to begin an online initiative called One in a Million that sought to promote new talent. Those months were a reality check for many. I realised that there are so many talented people without a platform to put themselves out there. My friends recommended that we start an Instagram page. Now that we have more time, we hope to make the initiative bigger, says Manjima, who plays the female lead in Kalathil Santhippom (KS).

The pandemic ended up offering an unplanned break to many artists. How did you deal with it?

Gautham Karthik will be teaming up with debutant director Arun Chandran for a film titled Chellapillai. The pre-production work is almost complete, and the film will go on floors this September.
“Chellapillai is a mass entertainer and it will remind the audience of something they should be proud about. Gautham Karthik will be seen in a completely different light in this film.
When Karthik sir was doing films like Varusham Padhinaaru, he changed the course of his career and gave us films like Paandi Nattu Thangam and Kizhakku Vaasal. Similarly, we believe this film will be a benchmark project for Gautham.

With Virumaandi coming out on Amazon Prime Video tomorrow, the cast and crew of this classic are back in the spotlight again. For Abhirami though, who settled in the US following the Kamal film s release, her role in Maara has already made her a topic of conversation.
Abhirami, who returned to acting a decade after the release of Virumaandi, has since been cautious about her choice of roles. In Maara, she plays the role of a sex worker, one played to great effect by the late actor Kalpana in the original Malayalam film, Charlie.
