Food council welcomes coordinator

Submitted photo REGION Formed in 2017, the Greater Franklin Food Council has a mission to foster a robust food system in Western Maine by bringing people together to ensure access to nutritious food; promote local farmers; and advocate for food-related programs and policies that strengthen our communities. The Greater Food Council is pleased to announce it has hired Deb Burd as a Program Coordinator to help advance its work. Deborah M. Burd recently retired as the Director of Grants Administration for Covenant Health of Tewksbury, MA. Deb was tasked with providing system-wide grant seeking strategies for three acute care facilities and the health network’s post-acute facilities. In addition, Deb provided consultation, on-site coordination, and staff and compliance oversight. She is a founding member of the Maine Women’s Agricultural Network, GrowSmart Maine and the Good Food Council of Lewiston-Auburn. Council seeks Youth Food Charter Champion nominations

Contributed photo The Good Food Council of Lewiston-Auburn will honor and celebrate the contributions of five outstanding local youth and/or youth groups who have supported a healthy local food system from farm-to-fork. The public is invited to submit nominations of individuals and/or groups ages 11 to 25, living in Androscoggin County, for consideration to win a Youth Food Charter Champion Award. Nominations can be submitted online through June 30 online at goodfood4LA.org. Information about award categories, including examples of qualities and actions that could qualify for an award, are also found on the website. Actions or self-education related “food systems issues” could be fitting qualifications to win an award. Young individuals and youth groups passionate about issues such as ending hunger,
